Phillip O. Crews is a pioneering natural products chemist whose career was transformed in 1974, when he encountered a marine biology text noting that the chemistry of sponges was largely unexplored. That insight redirected his research toward the study of marine organisms, especially sponges, and helped establish him as one of the leading figures in marine natural products research. Born in Urbana, Illinois, in 1943, he earned his B.S. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He joined the faculty at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1970, following a National Science Foundation fellowship at Princeton University.

Over the course of a distinguished career, Crews has mounted nearly 40 expeditions throughout the Pacific, isolating more than 800 pure compounds and thousands of sponge extracts in the search for new therapeutically useful natural products. His work has led to important discoveries, including the bengamides from Japis sponges collected near Fiji, compounds of considerable interest for their potential anticancer and anti-inflammatory activity. He has collaborated with industrial and clinical partners including Syntex, Novartis, and the Henry Ford Cancer Center, and his research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health. His achievements have advanced both the chemistry and the pharmacological promise of marine natural products, making him a highly deserving recipient of ASP's Research Achievement Award.

Phillip Crews Mentoring Award Details

The Phillip Crews Mentoring Award is to recognize an individual who has made outstanding contributions to mentoring in the field of natural products. Mentorship may include mentees in any stage of career in pharmacognosy including students, colleagues, and/or interns, in academic, government, non-government non-profit organization (NGO), and/or industrial settings.

The Phillip Crews Mentoring Award will consist of a podium talk at the ASP annual meeting, and a suitably inscribed plaque or gift. When possible, the awardee will be introduced by their nominee(s).

Phillip Crews Mentoring Award Directions

Eligibility

The Phillip Crews Mentoring Award will be awarded either at the annual or an interim meeting of the ASP. Recipients must be present in person to receive it. Applications/nominations for the Phillip Crews Mentoring Award must be submitted by February 15th. Membership in the ASP is not a requirement for consideration, nor is eligibility restricted on the basis of nationality.

Selection

To be made by a committee appointed by the President of the American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP), consisting of a chair and at least two other members. Applications will not be returned. The Committee will hold unsuccessful submissions for reconsideration in future years.

Application Process

The application form requires:

Nomination letter prepared by mentee(s) that outlines contribution to mentoring. A nomination letter may be co-signed by multiple mentees.
A detailed curriculum vitae of the nominee, including a list of mentees
Up to two additional supporting letters prepared by mentee(s) and/or colleague(s), may also be submitted on behalf of a candidate/nominee. Additional supporting letters may be co-signed by multiple mentees and/or colleagues.
