The ASP is very excited to welcome Margaret (Maggie) Hill as the inaugural Director of Social Media for the American Society of Pharmacognosy. Maggie, who received both BS and MS degrees from the University of Rhode Island, is currently pursuing a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Illinois, Chicago. Her work in Dr. Nancy Freitag’s laboratory focuses on understanding bacterial chemical ecology to reveal new strategies for disrupting virulence and combating severe infections. With her research, Maggie is passionate about uncovering the “why” behind the roles of natural products in nature to guide more rational applications and uncover novel mechanisms of action. To learn more about Maggie’s prior work, check out her recent publication on how metabolites from a marine sponge could serve as eco-friendly antifoulants. Maggie is already a leader in the ASP, serving as a member of the ASP Younger Members Committee, as Co-Chair of the Social Media Committee (with Melissa Henckel), and as Co-Chair of the ASP Student Chapter Committee. As Director of Social Media, Maggie will bring her incredible creativity and infectious enthusiasm to yet another important ASP initiative. She will lead efforts to 1) increase public awareness of natural product science, 2) recruit new members by promoting society events, and 3) highlight the amazing work being done by members of our society.
